International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a test of English Proficiency. It is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, British Council and IDP Education Australia. 

Candidates may choose either the Academic Module or the General Training Module:

IELTS EXAMINATION is broadly divided in 4 Sections (Modules) viz. READING, WRITING, LISTENING & SPEAKING.

The test is of 30 minutes and 10 minutes are given extra for transferring answers to the answer sheet. The candidates are tested on monologues and conversations.

The test is of 60 minutes in which students are tested on reading passages with tasks, text from descriptive and factual to discursive and analytical, diagrams, graph, text from books , journals, and newspapers.

The test is of 60 minutes, which comprises of writing task-1 of 150 words, describing tables, graphs, charts, diagrams and writing task-2 a short essay of 250 words. (In General Training Module candidates will be asked to write a letter of 150 words in Task-1)

Speaking test is of 11 to 14 minutes. In this test, candidates are put through face to face interview, short questions, speaking on a familiar topic and a discussion.

Marking scheme for IELTS
This test is conducted four times in a month. There is no pass or fail system in IELTS test. Candidates are judged on a band scale of 1 to 9 in each part of the test. These bands clearly demarcates a candidate’s ability to use and understand English. IELTS results are valid only for two years.


The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) asseses the ability of non-native speakers of English to use and understand North American English, as it is spoken and written in colleges and universities.

This exam is important for seeking admission to the universities in the United States. Many government agencies, scholarship programs, and licensing/certification agencies use TOEFL scores to evaluate English proficiency. It is recognised by more than 8,500 colleges, universities and agencies across the globe. It is a single format test i.e. TOEFL iBT Test.

Structure of TOEFL

Listening Comprehension assesses the student’s ability to understand North American English.

Structure & Written Expression assesses the candidate’s ability to recognize language appropriate for standard written English.

Vocabulary & Reading Comprehension assesses the candidate’s ability to understand non-technical reading material.

Essay Writing assesses the candidate’s ability to express ideas in standard written English.
